HENRY LEE III
AKA “LIGHT HORSE HARRY"
1756-1818

HENRY LEE III was born near Dumfries, Virginia, bright-eyed, and full of spirit. His skill as a horseman, as well as his temperament, made him a natural cavalryman. Folowing his graduation from Princeton, Harry returned home to Virginia, and was soon commissioned as captain in the fifth group of the Virginia Light Dragoons. As part of the Continental Army, Harry led his men in a surprise attack in Paulus Hook, New Jersey, capturing 400 British soldiers. His leadership soon earned him the nickname "Light Horse Harry".
